Tomaž Šalamun is one of the foremost figures of the Eastern European poetical avant garde.

He was born in Zagreb in 1941, took a degree in art history from the University of Ljubljana in 1965, and in the early 1970s began visiting the USA. Until recently, he was the cultural attaché to the Slovenian Consulate General in New York City, and now lives in Ljubljana.

To date he has published thirty-one books of poetry in Slovenian and has received many honours and awards.
