U. A. Fanthorpe was Head of English at Cheltenham Ladies'
College, until she left to work as a hospital clerk in Bristol
and become a writer. She was the first woman to be nominated
for the post of Oxford Professor of Poetry and was shortlisted
for the 1996 Forward Poetry Prize (Best Poetry Collection
of the Year) for Safe as Houses. In 2001 she was made
CBE for services to poetry and in 2003, she was awarded the
Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry.
Her recent collections include Queuing for the Sun
(2003), and her Collected Poems of 2004. From Me To You: Love Poems, with Rosie Bailey, was published in 2007 by Enitharmon Press.
