Edwin Morgan Archive cataloguer vacancy and current volunteer opportunities

We are recruiting for a cataloguer/archivist for our Edwin Morgan Archive work, and have several new openings for volunteers.

EDWIN MORGAN ARCHIVE CATALOGUER
Freelance fee £7,500 (or salaried equivalent)
Full-time or part-time, hours to be negotiated
Contract period November 2008-April 2009

The Scottish Poetry Library (Edinburgh) is seeking a cataloguer to assist in its Heritage Lottery Fund Edwin Morgan Archive project. The SPL has acquired an archive of the published works of Edwin Morgan. We are seeking a professionally qualified individual with experience of cataloguing and archive work.

Responsibilities

  • To assist the Librarian in the cataloguing and listing of the Edwin Morgan Archive
  • To assist in the preservation, digitisation and appropriate storage of the archive

Essential skills/qualities

  • Qualified librarian or archivist
  • Relevant professional experience
  • Cataloguing ability to MARC 21 standard
  • Previous experience of working with, and cataloguing of, archive material
  • Knowledge of Scottish literature

Desirable skills/qualities

  • Knowledge of the work of Edwin Morgan
  • Flexibility and initiative
  • IT skills, especially with library systems and standard applications software

CURRENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT THE SPL

VOLUNTEER EDWIN MORGAN ARCHIVE ASSISTANT
The Scottish Poetry Library (Edinburgh) is seeking volunteer assistants to assist in its Heritage Lottery Fund Edwin Morgan Archive project. The SPL has acquired an archive of the published works of Edwin Morgan and will be cataloguing and promoting this archive over the next six months. These positions would suit individuals who are motivated to find out more about Scotland's literary heritage, and have relevant interests and/or qualifications. They would assist in various areas of the work. Training will be given. Hours flexible.

VOLUNTEER LIBRARY ASSISTANT
The Scottish Poetry Library is seeking an individual with relevant interests and qualifications to assist in the day to day work of the library and with various library projects. Some previous experience of library work would be desirable, and strong IT skills are essential. An ideal position for a newly qualified professional or postgraduate student seeking experience. Hours flexible.

VOLUNTEER SHELVING AND SHELF TIDYING ASSISTANT
The Scottish Poetry Library is seeking an individual for regular weekly assistance in the important work of correctly reshelving returned items and in the tidying of library shelves. This position would suit an individual with an interest in literature. A methodical approach and close attention to detail would be essential, and a knowledge of Dewey helpful, although full training will be given.
