| The Library is sparkling with our new exhibition.
The much-loved poet George Bruce used to write haiku for his friends, and delivered haiku through Lucina Prestige's letterbox. She set about collecting the jewel-like poems in a book, Through the Letterbox, which is illustrated by Elizabeth Blackadder, and which they worked on together before George Bruce's death in 2002. Their work, along with striking portraits of George Bruce by John Bellany and Colin Dunbar, and poetry-inspired jewellery by Sheana Stephen, form our new exhibition curated by Lucina Prestige.
For this exhibition, the jeweller Sheana Stephen has created pieces based on poems by Kathleen Jamie, Anna Crowe, John Burnside, Valerie Gillies and Alan Spence. She picked certain poems for the evocative natural images which are complemented by the style of her work - subtle shapes, metals and unusual materials, including citrine, nephrite jade, Iona marble and Montrose porphyry, as well as more familiar materials like freshwater pearls and silver.
In addition, Sheana has specially designed some simple
and inexpensive silver jewellery for the Scottish Poetry
Library's staff, Friends and supporters, based on our
Patrick Geddes motto, "By Leaves We Live". A silver
shape, showing the stylized leaf of the logo with the
words "By leaves we live", comes mounted in a range
of different ways – including lapel badges and
tie pins, ear-rings, necklaces, cufflinks. This is the
first time that staff, borrowers and supporters have
actually been able to wear these words – on our
ties, ears, necks, keyrings. We'll be delighted if you
even want to wear your support for the Library on your
sleeves!
