| Leading poets from Sudan and Afghanistan visit Edinburgh for the only Scottish reading in UK tour.
Leading poets from Afghanistan and Sudan will visit the Scottish Poetry Library on Wednesday 26 October, at 7.30pm. As befits Edinburgh's status as the first World City of Literature, the city will be playing host to a truly international event.
The lyrical Arabic poems of Al-Saddiq Al-Raddi (Sudan) and Partaw Naderi's extraordinary Afghan work will be read by the poets themselves, with specially commissioned new English versions by Mark Ford and Sarah Maguire. Translator Hafiz Kheir and Sarah Maguire will read with Al-Raddi and Naderi, and the reading will be hosted by poet James Byrne.
The Poetry Translation Centre at London's School of Oriental and African Studies is flourishing under the directorship of poet Sarah Maguire, and promotes the work of non-European poets translated into English to the highest literary standards. Their World Poets' Tour aims to broaden literary tastes and encourage people to explore the rich and diverse poetic traditions of the many communities now established here.
The first reading of the tour in London brought a huge
audience of over 300, keen to make the most of such
a rare opportunity to hear international poets. Please
call the Scottish Poetry Library, 0131 557 2876 or email
reception@spl.org.uk
to book tickets, if you want to be at the Edinburgh
reading!
