and resources The Scottish Poetry Library can provide you with a wealth of poetry, critical writing and a wide range of background material relating to Scottish and international poetry. Library resources | Magazines | Translation Register | Scottish Pamphlet Poetry | School of Poets | Online advice to poets | Competitions The Library stocks a selection of books featuring exercises and games to stimulate poetry-writing, outlines of different poetic forms, and advice on publishing your work, whether with book and magazine publishers or by way of self-publishing. Explore this list of available books to see what will be most useful. Most poems, including those by established poets, appear first in magazines or periodicals rather than in book form. If you are considering sending work to a particular magazine, it is always worthwhile looking at back copies to see if your work and its editorial approach are compatible. The SPL can send you a list of current magazines which consider poetry submissions – please send us an A4 SAE. You can buy copies of magazines from us (by post if you wish). There are many magazines here for consultation too. › Full list of periodicals held at SPL The SPL holds a Translation Register, a list of Scottish-based poets and their particular language interests and skills. Please let us know if you would like to be added to the Register. Many poets are now publishing their poetry in pamphlet form. The Scottish Pamphlet Poetry site lists many of the small presses and authors now making their work available in this way, and you can buy their video on how to become involved in pamphlet poetry from the site. The School of Poets, founded in 1981 by Tessa Ransford, meets monthly in the Scottish Poetry Library. The aim of the School is to provide a meeting place for poets, new or experienced, to encourage and learn from each other. The idea is not to teach but to share. We focus on the poem, not the poet, and we are not publication oriented. The School is open and welcoming in structure and attitude. Members find the enthusiastic encouragement and honest criticism essential to their development as poets. Whether you write poems for yourself, for family and friends or with a view to eventual performance and publication, it can be incredibly useful to get feedback from people you trust at a stage when your poem is still a work in progress. Sharing in a small group you quickly realise that what you intend to say in your poetry isn't always what people understand. From this you may discover surprising new depths in your writing; on the other hand you may decide the poem needs a bit more work. Before meetings we gather for a cup of tea from 6.30pm and begin the session at 7.00pm. Each evening concludes with a 'read-around' in which we all participate. Meetings usually take place on the second Tuesday of every month apart from August and December - do call the Library in advance to confirm the date of the next meeting. During the Edinburgh Festival members act as hosts for the Scottish Poetry Library's Courtyard Readings. To join, just come along to the Library on any meeting night. There is no need to join immediately but, if and when you do decide to become a member, the annual subscription is £10 (£5 conc). In the meantime we ask visitors to pay £1 per meeting. Further details - call the Scottish Poetry Library on 0131 557 2876. To join the School of Poets e-mailing list please contact Anne Connolly at iamaine@aol.com . The Scottish Poetry Library cannot offer help on getting your work published, but there is some excellent online advice on how to send your work off for publication. The Poetry Library in London has an excellent online selection of magazines, and useful points on sending work to magazines. It has been brought to our attention that there are firms offering to publish work who promise to achive more than they can deliver. We suggest that you consult the following links for advice about publishers who solicit your work: › www.poetrykit.org/scam.htm We maintain the list of poetry competitions by deadline date. Check it regularly to see if there are any competitions to suit you. The SPL cannot promote you, accept manuscripts, offer critical feedback, or publish your work. |
