Programme › Schools The Scottish Poetry Library programme for children and young people. We have a number of events planned for the coming year. Details are still to be confirmed but you can express an interest in any of the following at any stage. Poem Wednesdays A themed visit, workshop and tour all in one. We'll split the class into two and one group will head off for an inspirational poetry walk taking in a particular aspect of the Royal Mile whilst the other group begins to develop their own ideas in a workshop in the Library. Then they swap over for the second half of the visit. Ten sessions throughout the year, two per term. Poetry and Parliament Combining a tour of The Scottish Parliament, a Q&A with MSPs and a poetry workshop in which to reflect and respond. Workshops in June and September. Gladstone's Land Combining a tour of The National Trust for Scotland property on the Royal Mile, with a poetry workshop. Workshops in June. Ghosts of War A visit to the galleries of the National War Museum and the National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle with a poetry workshop exploring war and peace. Workshops in November. Poets in the House at Holyrood A palace tour and workshop providing an exciting mix of history, imagination and poetry. Roughly one a month. Senior Folio sessions Three consecutive sessions for senior students to work with a poet to develop material for their Folio. Sessions in October, December and January. Poem-makers/Peace-makersOur Poem-makers/Peace-makers workshops ran in Glasgow last year, at the Gallery of Modern Art, with poet Gerry Loose, as part of Glasgow's Festival of Inspiration. Poetry PathwaysThe creative writing project Poetry Pathways was developed by West Lothian Council Arts and Cultural Services in partnership with the Scottish Poetry Library to engage small, rural primary schools in West Lothian in the arts. Exploring the themes of nature, the environment and rural isolation, pupils were encouraged to take a closer look at their natural and built environment through poetry. Poets Liz Niven, Elspeth Murray and Ken Cockburn helped pupils to develop their imaginations and their creative writing skills and, ultimately, to create their own poems using a variety of forms and techniques. The People's Palace, GlasgowSummer workshops were held at the People's Palace (Glasgow) exploring the exotic garden there. The Georgian House, Charlotte Square, EdinburghSeveral workshops are taking place at the Georgian House, Charlotte Square, in collaboration with Edinburgh World Heritage. The Tramway, GlasgowA series of workshops took place at the Tramway (Glasgow) with poet Gerry Cambridge working with three local schools to explore the building and environment. Contact us to find out more, or to register
interest in an event. We are also very happy to offer advice on any aspect of working with a poet, and can suggest suitable poets for your own projects. |
