Literature in Learning

Literature in Learning is a national network to support the creative use of language in schools, initiated by the Scottish Poetry library, Scottish Book Trust and the Scottish Storytelling Centre.

It promotes the development of innovative and sustainable projects that explore the creative use of language in classrooms, with teachers, writers, poets and storytellers working alongside children to enrich their experience over an extended period of time.

The initiative aims to ensure professional development for the adults involved, and looks to celebrate outcomes as well as finding ways of sharing effective practice. LiL is investigating the impact of projects on the adults and children involved, in partnership with Scottish universities.

LiL can help you develop and evaluate your own extended project and offers advice on professional development along the way.

Children's Poetry Bookshelf

The Poetry Book Society has relaunched its highly regarded Children's Poetry Bookshelf, a book club for children aged 7-11 designed to make the best children's poetry available to young readers in an exciting and enjoyable way.

Providing three different packages (for schools, libraries, and for individuals) the CPB sends titles recommended by an expert panel out to its members three times a year - a very useful way to receive poetry books of a high quality if you are unsure of which books to purchase.

The Scottish Poetry Library work in partnership with the Poetry Book Society, with the support of Scottish Arts Council Lottery funding, to spread news of the CPB to Scottish schools, libraries, parents and grandparents – anyone with an interest in providing children with high quality children's poetry resources.

The new CPB includes a brand new website dedicated entirely to children's poetry books which will have a lively, fun-filled section for children and offer suggestions for adults on the best poetry to buy for children. It also provides support for teachers and libraries, including teachers' activity sheets and posters, to encourage children to read and enjoy poetry.

Learning & Teaching Scotland

We are currently working with Learning & Teaching Scotland to develop a 'poetry tips' section for their website. This will go live in 2007.

LTS have also distributed our anthology The Thing that Mattered Most: Scottish poems for children free to every school in Scotland, with the support of the Scottish Executive.
