Making the Most of National Poetry Day

The Scottish Poetry Library is offering three twilight CPD sessions for teachers in the run-up to National Poetry Day.

All sessions will be led by poet Liz Niven and will take place in the Scottish Poetry Library, 5 Crichton's Close, Canongate, Edinburgh.

  • P5-7: Thursday 11th September 4.30-6.30pm
  • P2-4: Thursday 18th September 4.30-6.30pm
  • Early years: Thursday 25th September 4.30-6.30pm

Pregnant Pause

A creative writing workshop for mothers to be.

  • Give yourself time to reflect on the changes, challenges and joys of being pregnant.
  • Write a poem to your unborn child.
  • Explore and celebrate your unique experience in the company of other women.

Led by Lorna Irvine and Dorothy Baird, poets, writers, mothers.

Thursday 9th October 10am-12 noon

Poets At Work

Glasgow

On Wednesday 8th October, Gerry Cambridge will lead a workshop on the theme of 'work' at Glendale Primary School in Bellahouston. He will follow this up with a (very short) residency at the Finance Offices of Bibby Shipping Line in the afternoon.

On Friday 10th October Poet-in-Residence on the Glasgow Underground, John Rice, and Northern Irish poet, Moyra Donaldson will lead workshops in Copeland Primary School in Govan and Freight Design, at the Jacobean Building in the city centre.

Funded by Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Arts Council.

Ayrshire

Rab Wilson, the Scottish Poetry Library's Poet Partner in Ayrshire, will be leading a workshop at ATH Mining in Cumnock on National Poetry Day.

Shetland and East Dunbartonshire

And just to prove that poetry is for life and not just for National Poetry Day, further 'work' related workshops will be led by Jen Hadfield in Shetland and Raman Mundair in East Dunbartonshire in early November.

Flying the Flag for Poetry

Glasgow

A specially commissioned flag with a two word poem will be flown at the Botanic Gardens, Glasgow

Thursday 9th October 10am
All welcome.
Come to the flagpole in the Rose Garden at the top of the hill.

Renga Event: help create a joint poem on the theme of 'work', which many hands make light!

Thursday 9th October 2pm-4pm
All welcome.
In the Poetry Garden if dry, the Kibble Palace if wet.
Tea will be served.

Poetry Catchers

Glasgow

Craigton Primary School will launch their anthology of pupils' poems, Poetry Catchers, at the school on National Poetry Day.

You'll have an opportunity to hear pupils performing some of their poems on Saturday 11th October at:

Borders, Buchanan St, Glasgow 11am-12noon
Waterstone's, Braehead Shopping Centre, Braehead 2pm- 3pm
