Poets across Scotland are doing exciting work in schools, often in collaboration with other artists and on a variety of topics. Here are just some of the cross-arts projects they have been involved with.

‘Making a Poem-house' is a writing and art workshop I run with Brigid Colins. Pupils are asked to imagine, then describe in writing their ‘poem-house', using this as the ‘blueprint' for then actually making it. Pupils can also write poems and then make a specially designed page to ‘house' it, with each individual page being bound together to make a unique book.
We ran this over five weeks in autumn 2008 at Hopefield Primary School, Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, with P4/5 pupils. Sessions included a 'field trip' to a cycle-path near the school, haiku-writing workshops, visual art sessions making the 'poem-houses', and a presentation to pupils and parents/carers. This is a picture of all their finished 'pages' bound together as a big concertina book.

The Shetland Museum and Shetland Arts commissioned me in 2006 to work with the education officer at the Museum, a brilliant childrens' illustrator – Meilo So – and four groups of nursery children in Shetland Schools. We took sample items within the following themes to the nurseries: textiles; Vikings; crofting and fishing. I discussed the items with the children and took copious, hectic notes really just taking down their reactions. Then I worked these into poems, and Meilo created new illustrations for each poem. The poems with their illustrations have been incorporated into the Museum's permanent displays as a poetry 'trail' and a gorgeous booklet made for the children to take along.

I've just been involved in an amazing visual arts project - 'Air Iomlaid' (Exchange) adding poetic layers to a very ambitious and empowering P6/7 Edinburgh-Skye schools' exchange project.
The finished work will be exhibited in the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh.

I've done lots of cross arts projects, including working with pupils at Castle Douglas Primary School and designer, Sam Booth, to create this amazing Poet's Chair.
I'm just in the middle of a project with astronomy and we've made Poemspheres - like planetspheres.
I work a lot with Hugh Bryden printmaker and book artist and we are offering bookmaking and other art/poetry workshops.

I do a poetry, storytelling, visual arts and geography project called ‘The Atlantic Arc' with children, teachers, and sometimes parents get involved too. The idea is that the children have to create an Imramma (a long journey story) and as they cross the Atlantic from Ireland they visit three or four unusual, fictitious islands each of which has its own stories and poems. The children have to build the islands, making mountains, harbours, rivers etc, as well as create the stories and poems of those islands. At the end of the project (which could be a day or two days or a week depending on the amount of energy the participants want to spend on it!) they take an audience of teachers, parents and other children on the long journey across the ocean to visit each island and perform the poems and stories of each island.

I've done many combined projects with various artists for schools, often where the children visit a host gallery, but many others in the schools - wonderfully enjoyable, and productive projects, though I had to stop doing them after a while to give me time to concentrate properly on my own work!
Currently, Craigroyston Primary School are working on producing visual art responses to one of my poems, Mornin, with the artist, Joyce Gunn Cairns MBE. The work will culminate in an exhibition which I will open, and do a reading for the school beforehand.
